The Case for Exfoliative Cytology of Serous Effusions.

چکیده
DESPITE a world-wide surge of interest in the cytological detection of cancer, uncertainty about the usefulness of searching for cancer cells in serous effusions still lingers, and this feeling seems strong in Britain, where exfoliative cytology is gaining rather tardy acceptance. In fact, one British laboratory’s poor results with the exfoliative cytology of serous fluids have been adduced to question the reliability of exfoliative cancer cytology in general. 1

Pleural fluid cytology in suspected malignant effusions with special emphasis on cell block preparation
Background: Cytlogical examinations of serous effusions have been well accepted and a positive diagnosis often considered as definitive diagnosis. It helps for staging and prognosis of the patients for malignancy. Accurately diagnosing cells as being either malignant or benign reactive mesothelial cells in serous effusions is a common diagnostic problem in conventional cytological smears (CS). ...
متن کاملIdentification of Malignant Cells in Serous Fluids Using a Panel of Monoclonal Cytokeratin Antibodies, Epithelial Membrane Antigen(EMA) , Carcino Embryonic Antigen (CEA)
Abstract Background and Objective: Identification of malignant cells and the type of malignancy in Effusionsis very important. The main aim of this study was to differentiate between reactive mesothelial cells and malignant cells and to determine the type of the tumor cells in effusions with the aid of tumor markers Creatine Kinase (CK), EMA and CEA. Material and Methods: Forty serous flui...
متن کاملDiagnostic utility of Plasma Thromboplastin cell block preparation in cytological evaluation of serous effusions
Background: Cell block preparations act as a useful adjunct to smear cytology for categorization of malignant and benign effusions. Plasma thromboplastin cell block technique is simple, requires less time and offers improved cytomorphological features. Aim: To study the utility of Thromboplastin-plasma cell block technique and its diagnostic significance in conjunction with conventional cytolog...
متن کاملEvaluation of a panel of molecular markers for the diagnosis of malignant serous effusions.
PURPOSE Our main goal was to evaluate a panel of molecular markers for the detection of cancer cells in serous effusions and to determine their value as an adjunctive reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) test to cytologic examination. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN One hundred fourteen serous effusions from 71 patients with tumors and 43 patients with benign diseases were subjected to RT-PCR for expressio...
متن کاملThe BSCC code of practice--exfoliative cytopathology (excluding gynaecological cytopathology).
Exfoliative cytopathology (often referred to as non-gynaecological cytology) is an important part of the workload of all diagnostic pathology departments. It clearly has a role in the diagnosis of neoplastic disease but its role in establishing non-neoplastic diagnoses should also be recognised. Ancillary tests may be required to establish a definitive diagnosis. Clinical and scientific teamwor...
